Things to see in Casablanca
Casablanca is the key point of Moroccan commerce and the largest city in Morocco, its popularity is due in part to the classic Humphrey Bogar film; however, there are wonders that its mere presence makes it worth a visit.
1. Hassan II Mosque
Apart from being the largest city in Morocco, Casablanca caught our attention because of this incredible mosque. It is the fourth largest mosque in the world and one of the tallest ever built. Its minaret measures no less than 172 meters. It was inaugurated in 1993 and its exterior occupies more than 30,000 square meters, generating capacity for more than 90,000 people. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful mosques in the world.
2. Stroll along the Corniche
Like Doha, Abu Dhabi and the big Arab cities facing the sea, Casablanca also has a Corniche. It would become our promenade. Strolling along it while enjoying the sea breeze and views of the beautiful Hassan II Mosque is a highly recommended thing to do in Casablanca.
3. Discovering the old Medina of Casablanca
Casablanca is the most modern city in Morocco, yes, but it also retains its old medina, which contrasts sharply with the large avenues of the city. Compared to other medinas in other fairly touristy destinations in Morocco, Casablanca’s medina is quite small and less authentic.
Keep in mind that an earthquake in 1755 almost completely destroyed it and that in the last 100 years there have been many urban changes in the city, which obviously have greatly affected the character of this historic place. Get lost in its labyrinthine streets and do not get tired of bargaining to get some product that catches your attention.
4. Photographing the Clock Tower
It is one of the emblems of Casablanca. This Clock Tower was built in 1911 by the French captain Dessigny with the aim of convincing the inhabitants of the city of the need to get used to the rhythm of life marked by the industrial society. However, the one we see today is not the original, but a replica. It was demolished in 1948 because it was in a precarious condition and was not rebuilt until 1993. So take a good look at it!
5. Visit the United Nations Plaza
Right next to the Clock Tower is one of the ugliest squares we have seen. Although it does not hurt to know it as it is one of the nerve centers of Casablanca. It is a real chaos: cut off by the streetcar, full of people, tourists and without too many attractions other than stores and restaurants. We read several warnings about the presence of pickpockets in the area
6. Getting lost in the Central Market
This interesting market is surrounded by buildings from the French colonial era. It was created during that time to meet the most select requests of Europeans living in Casablanca. Today it is still the most important market in Casablanca. There you can find everything from fish and meat to a variety of spices. Undoubtedly, even if you do not plan to buy anything, visiting it is something highly recommended to do in Casablanca.
7. Mahkama Palace, one of the best monuments to see in Casablanca
This is one of the best treasures of the city, although to visit it is not easy. They don’t always let you in and if you are lucky, you must visit it with a guide, as it is used as a court of Justice. It is located next to the neighborhood market and its interiors are spectacular – don’t miss it!
8. Shopping at Morocco Mall
If anywhere in Morocco it makes sense to find a shopping mall of the size of Morocco Mall, it is in Casablanca. The largest city in the Maghreb is also considered the economic capital and financial engine of the country. Its more than 4 million inhabitants live, work and consume in a city with business centers, an important commercial port and universities that attract a young public. All this, taken together, confirms that Casablanca not only has a population that frequents its medinas and souks, but also needs modern commercial spaces where shopping and leisure go hand in hand.
Think we’re done with our recommendations of what to see in Casablanca? No, not really. There are still beautiful buildings, modern shopping malls and places to enjoy the night with music, lights and glamor, you will have to discover this on your next trip.
